About nitrate action now minnesota

Nitrate Action Now Minnesota is a group of Minnesotans from all backgrounds–scientists, farmers, health professionals, wildlife enthusiasts, and advocates–who want the same thing: A Minnesota with clean water and a healthy environment for generations to come.

For years, the state has invested in voluntary efforts to address Minnesota’s nitrate pollution problem. It's now clear that voluntary approaches aren’t working to solve a problem of this magnitude. Every year we wait, more Minnesotans are drinking contaminated water.

It’s time for the state to set clear, enforceable limits on fertilizer application and hold everyone to the same standard.

“Regulation is how we’ve solved problems like this before. I grew up on the Saginaw River in Michigan, where chemical plant pollution left you with a rash if you tried to swim. My mother-in-law said the Mississippi River smelled so bad in her childhood that people didn’t want to live along it. Both rivers are cleaner today, not because industry volunteered to change, but because of regulation. Nitrate pollution is less visible than an oil slick. But it is no less real, and no less treatable.”
